Lea Mercantini-Leibowitz taught in public and private schools where her classroom and masterful teaching served as a lab site and visitation site for balanced literacy instruction.
She later worked as a literacy coach, where she supported her colleagues in establishing reading and writing workshops in their classrooms, deepening their knowledge of balanced literacy instruction, planning units of study, implementing best practices for explicit instruction, and developing curriculum.
Lea then joined the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project as a staff developer, working closely with Lucy Calkins as a teaching assistant on the graduate level and on special projects.
As a staff developer, Lea also worked in schools nationally and internationally providing balanced literacy training.
She presented at numerous summer institutes and workshops and has co-presented at ILA alongside Georgia Heard. Independently, Lea continues to support teachers across the country boosting their knowledge and application of best practices in literacy instruction.
